The burial ground known as Baqi’ al-Gharqad or Baqi’ in Medina is situated southeast of the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid al-Nabawi).
Originally covered in thorny bushes, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) designated this area as a burial place. Among the first individuals interred here were Osman ibn Maz’un, the Prophet’s milk-brother, and Es’ad ibn Zurara from the Ansar.
The third Caliph, Hz. Osman, rests in the Baqi’ cemetery. Also buried here are the Prophet’s uncle, Hz. Abbas, his aunt Safiye, some grandchildren, his son Ibrahim, daughters Rukiye and Zeyneb, daughter Fatima, and son Hasan. The head of Hz. Huseyin, martyred in Karbala and later brought to Medina, is also buried alongside his mother.
Baqi’ is the final resting place of significant figures like Fatima bint Asad, the Prophet’s “second mother,” and the blessed wives of the Prophet – the mothers of the believers: Hz. Aisha, Hz. Hafsa, Hz. Umm Salamah, Hz. Zaynab bint Khuzaymah, Hz. Zaynab bint Jahsh, Safiyya, Rayhana, and Maria.
Jannat al-Baqi also houses the graves of prominent companions such as Abdurrahman ibn Awf, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Suhaib al-Rumi, and Abu Huraira, along with around ten thousand companions and numerous followers.
During his lifetime, Prophet Muhammad would visit Jannat al-Baqi, offering prayers for those buried there. Visiting the people of Baqi is recommended.
In the graveyard, structures over the graves of companions like Hz. Osman, the Prophet’s uncle Abbas, Hz. Aisha, and Hz. Hasan have been removed. The graves are now marked only by small stones at the head and foot. Over time, Jannat al-Baqi has expanded to cover an area of approximately 180,000 square meters and remains a functioning cemetery in Medina.
