The beloved Prophet, sent as a mercy to all worlds, honored the Earth with his presence on the 12th Monday night of the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, which corresponds to the 20th of April in the year 571 AD, as the dawn was breaking. He was born in the house that is now used as a library in Makkah, located about 24 km from the Masjid al-Haram, in a place named Shumaisi. This house belonged to Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) great-grandfather Hashim ibn Abd Manaf. After his passing, the house passed to his son Abdul-Muttalib as inheritance. During the division of Abdul-Muttalib’s belongings among his children, it fell to Abdullah, from whom it was inherited by Prophet Muhammad (SAW). During his migration, the Prophet entrusted this blessed house to Ali ibn Abi Talib’s brother Akil ibn Abi Talib. Upon migrating to Medina, the Prophet didn’t claim any rights to this house and upon his return to Mecca, he didn’t use this house. The descendants of Akil eventually sold the house to Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Sakafi, the brother of Haccac. Muhammad ibn Yusuf added it to his property named Bayza. Afterward, Harun al-Rashid’s wife, Zubaida Hanım, purchased this place and transformed it into a mosque. From then on, it became known as “Mawlid-i Nabi” (The Birthplace of the Prophet). This mosque was rebuilt during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (964-1557). Inside this mosque, there is a dome marking the exact point where the Prophet was born. After the Saudi administration took over, the mosque was reconstructed into its current form. (Qur’an Atlas, p.387) Presently, this mosque is located near the entrance to the tunnel leading to Mina and Aziziya, directly across from the Sa’y area between Safa and Marwa hills. Since 1379 (1959), it has been used as the Makkah Library. The other noble houses were demolished due to the expansion of the Masjid al-Haram and were integrated into it, while some were incorporated into marketplaces and streets.
Visiting this blessed place, where many miraculous events took place, to offer salutations and blessings upon the Prophet will undoubtedly serve as a means of mercy and intercession. When the Prophet was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken under the care of his grandfather Abdul-Muttalib. When he was eight, his grandfather also passed away, and his uncle Abu Talib took him into his care. After marrying Hz. Khadijah, he moved from his uncle Abu Talib’s house, where he had been staying, to his wife’s house. (Qur’an Atlas, p.392)
EBU TALIB’S HOUSE
The house of Abu Talib was located between the house where the Prophet was born and the Abu Kubays Hill. Hz. Ali was also born here. There was once a mosque built in remembrance of this, but now it has been completely demolished and turned into a garage for Hajj buses. (Qur’an Atlas, p.392)
